LITERATURE

OUR expanding use of modern technology does not mean that we have to give up the classics-use to learn more about literature .

  • My favourite literature website is www.scholastic.com/harrypotter . The site offers a Harry Potter screensaver , wezard challenge and information about the popular series . A great chapter on the website is the pronunciation guide-click on the difficult-to-pronunce names from the books , like Mimbulus Mimbletonia , and hear the correct pronunciation through your speakers.
  • For book reviews and extensive reading go to www.mybooks.com . If it is too much for one sitting , you can print out the reviews and read them later . Great reviews of science fiction and fantasy books are on the website www.sfsite.com .
  • To buy books online try www.amazon.com and www.books.com . If you need them to be delievered to Myanmar , this may be difficult . But the websites do offer suggestions for other books in the same category as yours .Write down the titles and ask the local bookshop owners in Yangon if they carry them.
  • If looking for children's books , check out www.suzyred.com and www.familygames.com . The latter includes games , quizzes and the possibility to download children books .
  • Recently read a book from the series Chicken Soup for the Soul? If you want to submit your own personal story for its next issue , go to www.chickensoup.com and send in your ideas . In addition , you can read stories that will be published in the latest issue , Chicken Soup for Bride's Soul , in the chapter sneak preview .
  • For websites that feature poetry , try www.author-network.com and www.literature.org .Both sites are useful if you are looking for information on a specific author .If you prefer to read poems in Myanmar language , www.bagan.net.mm/poem is right for you . There are poems about everything from love to modernity .
  • "A woman is like a tea bag-you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water," wrote Eleanor Roosevelt . Find this quotation and more than 19,000 others from over 2400 authors on www.qoutationspage.com . Search by author , including Shakespeare , Mark Twain , Voltaire , Tolkien and Oscar Wilde , or by subject . The website also offers book reviews.
  • For more information on literature , go to a search engine like www.google.com or www.yahoo.com and type as keyword "author" or "books" .
